Santiago de Cuba, Jan 28.- In the grounds of the José Martí Mausoleum - where, as he wished, a bouquet of flowers and the flag are always present - people of all ages from Santiago gathered to pay tribute on the 173rd anniversary of his birth, preceded by a military ceremony and a changing of the honor guard.

To the melody of the Versos Sencillos, students from the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School of Santiago de Cuba placed the floral wreaths sent by the Leader of the Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz; the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-CanelBermúdez; and one in the name of the Cuban people, at this sacred site located in the Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery.

Likewise, flowers were placed at the funeral monuments to Céspedes, Mariana, and to the Master's best disciple: Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, as a tribute to those who continue to be protagonists and inspiration for our one and only Revolution.

According to Javier Borges Nápoles, a young university student, "Martí left us a warning regarding the giant of the seven-league boots, which today is directing threats at us (...), therefore, the commitment will always be to defend our independence, achieved and paid for with blood in more than one hundred years of struggles."

The ceremony was headed by the member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and its First Secretary in this indomitable province, Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, and other government authorities, chiefs and officers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, as well as political, mass and social organizations.

As tradition dictates, at 12 p.m., 21 artillery salvos will be fired simultaneously at Santa Ifigenia and the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress, in homage to the most universal of Cubans. (Text and photos: Granma)
