Camagüey, Jan 29. - Contrary to the assumptions of many specialists and fans, the only quarterfinal subseries that needed to reach a seventh game is being contested by the teams from Las Tunas and Villa Clara.
And truly the duel has been closely contested, as neither side yields ground in pursuit of victory, which seemed unthinkable days ago when this particular matchup was forecast.
The Leopards [Villa Clara] arrived with an impressive string of nine consecutive wins, and naturally, that pace led some to assume their eliminated adversaries were not giving their all.
One of the questioned teams was Camagüey, which appeared at the Augusto C. Sandino stadium with a decimated roster that included barely four pitchers for three games. While they couldn't qualify, at least winning one would grant them a higher placement in the tournament.
Victory was very close in the last matchup, but in an unfortunate ninth inning, the hosts overwhelmed the improvised Camagüey’s pitching and manufactured no less than six runs.
And that's the end of the story... the rest is already known.
To complete their regular season task, the Villa Clara team defeated their current rivals on that path, and since then, and perhaps until now, it was rumored that everything stemmed from the interest to deliberately eliminate the always powerful Pinar del Río, supposedly because they were more dangerous for the current champions.
Time has taken care of showing that in baseball nothing is certain, and it turns out that the teams from Las Tunas and Villa Clara have given this stage a better flavor, which already has three teams with tickets to the next phase: Industriales, Matanzas, and Artemisa.
Unfortunately, one of the two will leave the competition. But that's what the championship stipulates; however, there will be no loser, as both have shown a competitive spirit on the field, even if this is just a seemingly very subjective perception.
Both arrive today at the deciding game, tied at three wins apiece.
May the best team win... though I reaffirm, each with the applause they deserve. Whether Lumberjack [Las Tunas] or Leopard, whether green or orange. (Text: Gilberto Rodríguez Rivero / Collaborator of Radio Cadena Agramonte) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
