Russia condemns truly critical Cuban context due to U.S. blockade

Moscow, Feb 9. - Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated today that the situation in Cuba is truly critical, while the United States intensifies its economic and military pressure on the Caribbean nation.

"We maintain intensive contact with our Cuban friends through diplomatic and other channels," the Kremlin spokesperson said when commenting on reports about the problems faced by the largest of the Antilles regarding aircraft and transport fuel.

In this regard, he lamented that, indeed, the suffocating tactics by the White House are causing serious difficulties for the country.

Faced with this scenario, Peskov reported that Moscow is discussing with Cuban authorities to seek solutions.

"We are talking with our Cuban friends about possible ways to resolve these problems or, at least, to provide assistance within our capabilities," concluded the head of the Russian Presidential Press Office.

The Cuban government presented on February 6 the measures it adopted to confront the tightening of U.S. policies against the island.

Washington's coercive policy has been characterized by financial persecution and secondary sanctions against ships and companies attempting to bring fuel to our country—ships that are lawfully contracted by Cuba, exercising its right like any other state in the world," stated Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Oscar Pérez-Oliva.

The announced initiatives concern the production and use of fuel, the energy sector, agriculture, and health.

In particular, the Caribbean authorities called for maximizing internal capacities, both for food production and electricity generation through renewable sources.

On January 29, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a "national emergency" in the face of the alleged "unusual and extraordinary threat" that, according to Washington, Cuba would pose to the security of the North American country and the region.

The text accuses the Cuban government of aligning with numerous hostile countries, harboring transnational terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, and allowing the deployment of sophisticated military and intelligence capabilities from Russia and China on the island.

In response to these unfounded accusations, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that this new measure exposes the fascist, criminal, and genocidal nature of a clique that has hijacked the interests of the American people for purely personal purposes.

In this context, Russia expressed its firm willingness to continue providing Cuba with the necessary political and material support.

"The Russian side has reaffirmed its principled position regarding the unacceptability of exerting economic and military pressure on Cuba, including blocking energy supplies to the island, which could provoke a serious deterioration of the economic and humanitarian situation in the country," stated the Foreign Ministry of the Eurasian giant in a communiqué.
