Moscow, Feb 9. - United Nations Secretary-General AntónioGuterres has explained how to prevent a planetary catastrophe in statements made this Monday to the British newspaper The Guardian, following a meeting of prominent global economists held last month at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
In Guterres' opinion, humanity's future requires an urgent review of existing accounting systems because—he argues—they are leading the planet to the brink of disaster.
"We must truly value the environment and move beyond gross domestic product [GDP] as a measure of progress and human well-being. Let us not forget that when we destroy a forest, we generate GDP. Whenweoverfish, wegenerate GDP," he stated.
In this sense, the UN chief pointed out that moving beyond gross domestic product means measuring what truly matters to people and their communities. "GDP tells us the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Our world is not a giant corporation. Financial decisions should be based on more than just a snapshot of profits and losses," he argued. (Text and photo: RT)
