Camagüey, Mar 2.- The Camagüey Meteorological Center will strengthen aerological activity by receiving a station for conducting real atmospheric soundings over the province, as part of a project by the Institute of Meteorology, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET, for its acronym in Spanish) and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cuba.
This radiosonde process will allow acquiring information on variables at different tropospheric levels, of great value for forecasts, mainly in the very short term, and for studies of Atmospheric Physics, stated Beatriz Martínez Pérez, director of the Camagüey institution.
The activity, she highlighted, has a historical precedent in Camagüey, which will be reactivated and strengthened with the start of the project, which seeks to improve the quality and accuracy of weather forecasts, especially in the face of extreme meteorological phenomena such as hurricanes.
A publication by UNDP Cuba on its official profile on the Facebook social network assures that the initiative includes the installation of a new surface weather station and two radiosonde stations, and will modernize eight existing stations in the country.
It also indicates that the project will receive support from the United Nations specialized fund Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF).
Through the technologies that the new project will provide, Cuba will expand and strengthen its national meteorological observation network, benefiting the quality and accuracy of weather forecasts, especially in the face of cyclones, events that impact the Caribbean country every year.
