Cuban YilianTornésuntouchable: 9-0 in Mexican softball league

Havana, Mar 11.- Cuban pitcher YilianTornés remains uncompromising and secured her ninth victory without defeat, in the 3x1 win of the defending champion Diablos RojosFemenil against Sultanes de Monterrey Femenil, in the III Mexican Softball League (LMS, by its acronym in Spanish).

The pitches from the experienced left-hander from Granma became indecipherable for her rivals. She pitched four innings at a pace of one hit, one run, one walk, and three strikeouts, which helped her lower her earned run average to 1.50.

Applause for the victory. But the medical staff must keep a close eye on Tornés, who had to leave the game in the fifth inning after injuring her ankle while making her pitching motion.

The capital city team opened the scoring in the first inning with a decisive two-run burst, thanks to a home run by American Jazmyn Jackson with a runner on base.

After four and a half innings in which both defenses hung zeros, the team from Monterrey got within 1x2 with a hit by Marcia Merino.

At the start of the seventh inning, the scarlet-clad team made the final score 3x1 with a solo home run by fellow American Janae Jefferson.

In this match, Cuban shortstop LiannelysZayas Pérez went 1-for-4, with two strikeouts, closing the regular season with a .383 average.

Diablos RojosFemenil finished in first place in the standings and will face Olmecas de Tabasco (fourth place), a team that qualifies for the postseason for the first time in the history of this circuit. The postseason will begin on Tuesday in a best-of-five series. (Text and photo: JIT)
