Institute of Tropical Geography celebrates 64 years

Havana, Mar 11.- The Institute of Tropical Geography (IGT, by its acronym in Spanish) celebrated its 64th anniversary this past Monday, as noted by Armando Rodríguez Batista, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, on his Facebook profile while congratulating the institution.

Founded on March 9, 1962, by resolution of the National Commission of the Academy of Sciences, presided over by Rebel Army Captain Antonio Núñez Jiménez, with Salvador Massip Valdés as its first director, it has had an outstanding trajectory in its scientific work.

The institution was born with the purpose of surveying the Cuban archipelago, developing an updated National Atlas, and supporting the country's economic and social development plans from a scientific perspective.

Currently, the IGT, attached to the Environment Agency, produces geographic, environmental, and geomatic knowledge and solutions to contribute to climate change adaptation, disaster mitigation, food security, and coastal management.

Among its most relevant results is the series of National Atlases of Cuba, which began in 1970 and continued in 1979 and 1989, culminating in the "LX Anniversary" National Atlas, carried out entirely by Cuban institutions and specialists.

This latest project involved the participation of more than 300 professionals from 65 entities and is distributed in digital format, via a web geoportal and mobile application, allowing for the constant updating of geographic information.

Cuba, as a small island developing state, faces impacts from climate change such as sea level rise, increase in average temperature, extension of drought areas, and changes in rainfall patterns.

The IGT conducts research in this context and maintains its educational work, with postgraduate programs, master's degrees, and doctorates in Geographic Sciences, in addition to managing the Digital Repository and publishing the Cuban Journal of Geography.

The formation of human capital constitutes a strategic priority to face environmental and climate challenges, according to institution officials. (ACN) (Photo: Takenfromthe Internet)
