Cneuro warns of harmful effects of burning trash

Havana, Feb. 27.- The Cuban Neuroscience Center warned from its Facebook profile about the health risks derived from the uncontrolled burning of waste in urban areas, a practice that releases toxic substances capable of affecting the brain and other vital organs.

The institution explained that incinerating plastics, batteries and electronic equipment generates heavy metals and dioxins, compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier and act as neurological poisons.

According to specialists, prolonged exposure to these substances can damage memory, alter cognitive development in childhood and favor the appearance of neurodegenerative diseases.

The Center specified that the incomplete combustion of waste produces persistent pollutants in the environment and in the human organism, where they can remain for years.

Scientific research has shown that dioxins also affect the hormonal system, in addition to causing damage to the lungs and heart, and contaminating the soil and water.

The entity stressed that setting fire to dumps does not constitute a solution, but rather turns those spaces into sources of poison for the population.

The Cuban Neuroscience Center urged to avoid this practice and recalled that protecting the environment is equivalent to caring for the mental and physical health of the community. (ACN) (Photo: Taken from Internet)
