Díaz-Canel presided over tribute for youth anniversaries

Havana, October 22 – Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Republic, led the tribute this Tuesday at the José Martí Memorial for the 65th anniversary of the creation of the Association of Young Rebels (AJR, for its acronym in Spanish) and the 60th anniversary of the newspaper Juventud Rebelde, the presidency stated on its social media.

The meeting was attended by founders of the AJR, staff members of the Cuban youth newspaper, and leaders of the Union of Young Communists (UJC), along with Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Party Central Committee.

Díaz-Canel highlighted the significance of both anniversaries as symbols of unity and continuity, and reflected on the concepts of study, work, and rifle, contained in the motto of the UJC, as pillars of the revolutionary formation of the new generations.

The president recalled the practice of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, of summoning the people to every battle, and called for a study of his legacy on the eve of the centennial of his birth, scheduled for 2026, in conjunction with the 9th Party Congress.

Founders of the AJR, such as Amalia Catalá Álvarez and Luis Enrique Colomé Dagnesses, shared testimonies about the origins of the youth organization and highlighted the validity of the torch of unity lit in 1960.

Meyvis Estevez Echevarría, first secretary of the National Committee of the Union of Young Communists of Cuba, highlighted the significance of the date and asserted that this was an exchange between the new generations and the founders, marked by unity and commitment to Cuba.

Journalist Juana Carrasco Martín, winner of the José Martí National Journalism Award, recalled the history of Juventud Rebelde and highlighted the current challenges of communication, while young reporters from the newspaper presented their commitment to truthful journalism that is accessible to young people.

Leaders of the Federation of University Students and the Federation of Middle School Students presented experiences of community work and participation in economic and social tasks as part of youth work throughout the country.

The President emphasized the importance of young people participating in all social and political processes and affirmed that the defense of the Revolution requires unity, preparation, and commitment in every setting. (Text and photo: ACN)
