Havana, November 3 - The memories of the infernal wind, the relentless rain, the swollen river, and the possessions lost in less than 12 hours have not yet faded. One cannot ask for more courage in rescuing children, the elderly, pregnant women, and men and women than what has been witnessed these days in the eastern lands. It is impossible to think about what the Cuban east has lived through and is still experiencing without searching our memories for that supportive strength that has always lifted us up after other hurricanes.
Melissa warned, arrived, and devastated houses, roofs, trees, highways, and electrical and communication poles. It was another meteorological phenomenon with a woman's name for the place that first sees the sun in this archipelago. Dozens of personal and family stories now bear its scars. Material aid from the Government and foreign friends has not been delayed, but these are very tense and sad hours, filled with uncertainties and shadows.
To the desolation, companionship and collective work are added, with brigades from all over the country. To the destruction, partial repairs and temporary housing solutions are being applied as much as possible, along with subsidized prices for construction materials. To the logical stress of the souls, culture arrives in all its dimension. And once again, memory reacts: we are alive!
Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Holguín, and Las Tunas, with varying degrees of impact, are mobilizing the country not just for their aid, but for their rebirth in the shortest time possible. The daily struggle to access drinking water, cook food, or have electricity cannot withstand another priority. Therefore, the recovery phase involves all social actors in their noblest sentiments, without allowing selfishness, price speculation, or uncontrolled hoarding to prevail.
The task we have ahead demands time and experience. As the Historic Leader of the Revolution, the principal hunter of hurricanes through his example, rightly said: "...in the midst of the demolishing and fresh blow of hurricanes, is when we must demonstrate what we are capable of doing."
