Security Council calls for ceasefire in Sudan before Ramadan

United Nations, March 9.- The UN Security Council called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan with the approval of a resolution considered key given the approach of the month of Ramadan.

The text, with 14 favorable votes and Russia abstaining, urged the parties in conflict to seek a sustainable solution to the fighting through dialogue.

The security body also expressed serious concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation, including crisis levels or worse of acute food insecurity, particularly in the Darfur region.

The resolution also warned about continued reports of violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including cases of sexual violence in conflict.

The Council urged all parties to ensure the removal of any obstacles and allow full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, including cross-border and cross-border access, and to fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law, including to protect civilians and civilians.

The demand for a ceasefire is considered key given the imminent arrival of the month of Ramadan next Sunday.

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, called yesterday to honor the values ??of that holiday with the silencing of weapons and the search for a definitive end to the conflict.

This cessation of hostilities must lead to a definitive silencing of weapons throughout the country and mark a firm path towards lasting peace for the Sudanese people, he added.

The UN estimates that, as a result of the war, more than six million are seeking refuge in Sudan and nearly 1.7 million have been forced to flee to neighboring countries in what is considered the largest refugee crisis in the world.

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces broke out in April 2023 in and around the capital and has spread to several regions, plunging the nation into chaos. (Text and photo: PL)
