the validity of José Martí the Apostle of Cuba in Guatemala

Guatemala City, March 13.- The figure of José Martí remains valid today in Guatemala, highlighted here Ana Cintrón, president of the Cultural Association that bears the name of the Apostle of the Independence of Cuba.

From any point of view, her work and thought provide proposals, solutions, ways of thinking, of solving things, plans to address critical situations, the historian stated in statements to Prensa Latina.

The young Martí, at 24 years old, became a teacher in this country, a creator, it was something that he took with him, but he left that mark that remains and remains latent for some miraculous reason, emphasized the great-great-granddaughter of the Cuban patriot José Joaquín Palma.

Asked about the plans of the Association she directs for 2024, Cintrón stated that after the COVID-19 pandemic and the vicissitudes of the change of Government, they intend to resume printing a book by a renowned Guatemalan.

He explained that this is the lawyer and journalist David Vela (1901-1992), who wrote about Martí's presence in this Central American nation, a text published in 1954 by the Ministry of Education of the time.

For me it is a work of reference, he noted, it describes the Cuban's stay, but also analyzes the Guatemala essay, interprets it, links it with local artists, he stressed. We think it is a rich book to rescue, we found it digitized and we have an agreement to be able to reprint it, described the president of the José Martí Cultural Association in the land of the quetzal.

The other project is to seek support from the municipality to be able to renovate the monument to the Cuban hero on the capital's Avenida Las Américas, which has already been established for 12 years, he noted.

We spoke with the Cuban director and sculptor Andrés González about the materials that can be used that do not affect the original project, revealed Cintrón, who assured that they are working in that direction.

We will resume contact - he added - with the new mayoral authorities to be able to have it ready for the 129th anniversary of the death of a Martí who lived in this country from March 1877 to July 1878.

We are also preparing an agenda for the upcoming month of May with the presentation of a conversation, a Cuban film festival, among other activities.

He recalled that they did not hold assemblies due to COVID-19, since the statutes say that they are in person, so they will resume them and have matters up to date, he stated in his words to this agency.

He recognized the link with the work of the Apostle of Cuba of local intellectuals Estuardo Meneses, Fernando Marín, Marina Coronado, Ruth del Valle, Guadalupe Castillo, Mirna Ramírez, Julio Cintrón and Marielos Orellana.

The José Martí Cultural Association in Guatemala, since its constitution in 2012, has worked to strengthen ties with Cuba and Latin America, following the thoughts of that universal figure. (Text and photo: PL)
