Cuba reaches its first million tons of crude oil extracted from its fields

Havana, June 20 – So far this year, the Cuba-Petroleum Union has reached the first million tons of crude oil extracted from Cuban fields. Although this production does not cover all of the country's demand, 90% of it is used for electricity generation, the entity reported.

In statements to National Television, Yaser Rivera Galbán, head of the Varadero processing plant in Matanzas, specified that the number of tons achieved implies strategies in central fields.

He added that more than 3,000 tons have been recovered from the Majagual field and approximately 15,000 tons have been recovered from the replacement of a section of pipeline that was frequently experiencing breakdowns.

The crude oil and gas acquired come from fields in central Cuba, which account for more than a third of the million tons, and the remainder was supplied by areas in the west and the province of Ciego de Ávila.

In this latter territory, engineer María Hernández Bernal, business manager of the company Oil drilling and extraction in Cuba, explained that, although the extracted liquid is smaller in volume, it stands out for its hydrocarbon quality, destined for the refining of dielectric oil, a key component of the national electricity grid infrastructure, as well as for the manufacture of asphalt.

The result of crude oil production is in line with the Government Program to counteract the decrease in national production and advance in the energy sovereignty. (Taken from Cubadebate with information from Granma Digital)
