At least 12,300 dead minors in Gaza

United Nations, March 14.- At least 12,300 minors died in Gaza in the last four months under the siege of Israeli bombs, the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported today.

This figure is higher than the 12,193 children who died worldwide between 2019 and 2022, and even more terrifying in light of the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), which indicated this Wednesday that child mortality has increased. is at its historical minimum.

According to the WHO, this situation is more distressing after reporting how the fight against child mortality reached a milestone, since in the latest estimates the number of children who died prematurely before turning five years old was reduced to 4.9 million in 2022.

For his part, the Commissioner General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, expressed that “this war is a war against children. “It is a war against their childhood and their future.”

He described as astonishing the latest data from the Gaza health authorities that reflect the repeated international calls for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave, where intense Israeli bombing since October 7 has devastated entire areas of the Strip. To date, more than 31,184 Palestinians have been killed and 72,889 injured, according to local health authorities.

Such data was released alongside repeated warnings from UN humanitarian staff about the catastrophic situation in Gaza, where one in four people is on the brink of famine, at least 576 thousand.

In the opinion of the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, the youngest are those who can least cope with hunger and disease, with one million children who have already left their homes because of the war and some 17 thousand minors unaccompanied or separated from their families, one percent of the 1.7 million total displaced people.
