Political and civil leaders of the United States call for an end to the blockade

Havana, April 4.- Political, religious and civil rights leaders from the state of Maryland, in the United States, asked Senator Ben Cardin to use his influence as president of the Foreign Relations Committee of the upper house of Congress of that country, to lift the blockade on Cuba.

As explained by the newspaper Granma, in a letter to Cardin, the coalitions of more than a hundred groups argued that the sanctions against the island are the main cause of the humanitarian and economic conditions suffered by its population.

The letter argues that, while US-Cuba policy is not solely in Cardin's hands, there is no doubt that he has unique influence, both in passing laws and in his executive action.

Maryland civil rights leaders were united in their opposition to measures that, for more than half a century, have resulted in nothing but widespread suffering.

As communities of faith, morally opposed to the use of economic war against our Cuban brothers; as diaspora groups concerned about the displacement of people from their homes; as humanitarians, academics, activists and human rights defenders; We say unequivocally that it is time to end the embargo on Cuba, they concluded.

This request occurs when Cuba faces an economic crisis exacerbated by unilateral US measures, and by its inclusion in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, a designation that excludes the Caribbean nation from a large part of the international financial system.

Cardin was seen as a key actor in the approach strategy of the Barack Obama Administration (2009-2017) towards Cuba. (ACN) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
