Cuba remembers 22nd anniversary of the coup d'état in Venezuela

Havana, April 12.- The Venezuelan Diplomatic Mission in Cuba today commemorated the triumph of the Bolivarian Revolution over the coup d'état perpetrated by the leadership of the national oligarchy 22 years ago against President Hugo Chávez.

In the meeting held at the headquarters of the Caracas embassy in Havana, it was recalled that the fascist riot that began on April 11, 2002 lasted until the 13th, less than 48 hours, thanks to the mobilization of the people who fought in the streets for the return of the Venezuelan leader to his position.

Moderated by the Venezuelan ambassador Orlando Maneiro Gaspar, a conversation was held with Cuban journalists Randy Alonso Falcon and Arleen Rodríguez Derivet, director and deputy director, respectively, of the television program Mesa Redonda, who shared experiences about those events.

In particular, they referred to the role played by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and the media of the Caribbean island in breaking the media siege established by the coup factors in the South American nation.

Maneiro Gaspar recalled the historical context in which the oligarchic sectors, in complicity with the United States government, tried to undemocratically stop the thread of social transformations initiated in 1999 by the Bolivarian Revolution, in favor of the people.

He also highlighted the role of the civil-military union achieved by Chávez, which, together with the most humble sectors of Venezuela, demanded the return of their kidnapped president and reversed the coup.

The topic of the meeting was also the siege during those days by anti-Cuban reactionary sectors of the headquarters of the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in Caracas (Embassy, ??Consulate and Residence) and the bravery of its diplomats, willing to die before allowing the coup plotters to enter. to Cuban territory.

Maneiro Gaspar stated that these officials – some present, such as former ambassador Germán Sánchez Otero, and diplomats Elio Perera and Rafael Hidalgo – are examples of dignity and defense of national sovereignty.

The meeting was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in this capital, representatives of different Cuban State and Government organizations, the Fidel Castro Center and the Che Guevara Study Center, as well as solidarity organizations with Venezuela. (Text and photo: PL)
