Dominican leftist leader affirms the blockade of Cuba is criminal

Santo Domingo, April 12.- The general secretary of the United Left Movement (MIU) of the Dominican Republic, Miguel Mejía, today described as criminal the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

Mejía highlighted to Prensa Latina the resistance demonstrated by the Cuban Revolution during more than six decades of economic siege, and recalled the intensification of this hostile policy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He considered the dignity of the people in complex economic situations aggravated by Washington's policy, which makes it difficult for Havana to acquire food, medicine, and technology and even, during the most difficult moments of the pandemic, hindered access to ventilation equipment. mechanics and oxygen.

The also Minister for Regional Integration Policies of the Dominican Republic, when referring to the extraterritorial nature of the blockade, argued that businessmen interested in trading with Cuba cannot do so given the impossibility of making bank transfers due to a unilateral measure that constitutes, he considered, a violation of international law.

In his office in the National Palace, Mejía rejected interference in the internal affairs of the Caribbean nation and defended the sovereign right of Cuba, and of all peoples, to self-determination.

The owner considered the discomfort that the shortage causes in some people in the neighboring country to be normal, while he warned that unlike what happens in other nations with different political systems, the shortage that hits Cuban families is not due to bad administration, corruption or incapacity of the Government.

The blockade is criminal, he pointed out, and pointed out that the MIU has always been and will always be at Cuba's side.

The general secretary of the MIU praised his relations with Fidel Castro, and said that at the time when it was a crime to be his friend, during the years of Joaquín Balaguer's government, he published his photos with the revolutionary leader and almost circled the world to reach Cuba.

He recalled Fidel's visit to the Dominican Republic in 1998 and his generosity in donating a prize he received to build a polytechnic in Baní, which bears the name of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez, and has trained hundreds of young people in different specialties.

During the interview, Mejía also spoke with Prensa Latina about the electoral process that will take place next May in the Dominican Republic and in particular offered his opinion on the decision of opposition parties to go to the Organization of American States (OAS).

In that sense, he maintained that appearing before that organization to denounce a political maneuver by the Dominican Government in view of the presidential and legislative elections is not serious, because the OAS and its secretary general, Luis Almagro, he said, have become an puppet of the gringos.
