UNESCO awards Palestinian journalists who cover Gaza

Santiago de Chile, May 3.- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decided to award the Guillermo Cano award to Palestinian journalists who cover the situation in Gaza, where more have died since October 7 of 34,500 people due to Israeli bombings.

The award is presented in Chile on the occasion of the World Conference on Freedom of the Press, sponsored by UNESCO.

In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we want to convey a strong message of solidarity and recognition to the Palestinians who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances, said Mauricio Weibel, president of the jury.

Meanwhile, the director general of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, pointed out that this is a tribute to the courage of communicators who face difficult and dangerous circumstances.

For yet another year, the Award reminds us of the importance of collective commitment to ensure that journalists around the world can continue to carry out their essential work of reporting and investigating, she noted.

The Guillermo Cano award, created in 1997, is the only one awarded to press professionals within the UN system and is named after the Colombian communicator murdered in front of the offices of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogotá, Colombia, on December 17. 1986.
