Havana, Sep 4.- Cuba will contribute its experiences to the Tourism Law Observatory of the Americas and the Caribbean, which today begins its work in its recently inaugurated headquarters in Montevideo.
This was stated by the legal director of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) of the Antillean island, Juan José Álvarez, who represented his country at this founding moment.
In an interview with Prensa Latina, the Cuban official said that the Observatory, the first of its kind in the world, is the result of the work of UN Tourism in the region.
Uruguay was chosen as the host during the 69th UN Tourism Meeting of the Americas that took place last May in the Cuban resort of Varadero.
Its birth accompanies the challenges that tourism is going through to be sustainable, accessible and inclusive, now marked by digitalization processes and artificial intelligence, said Álvarez.
He explained that in a first stage the Observatory will carry out a diagnosis of tourism legislation in the area, in order to promote legal proposals and best practices.
Cuba will present the values ??that support its tourism policy, based on peace and security, he stressed.
He said that work is being done on the island to shape a draft Tourism Law, in which various experts are working, including from the Law and Tourism faculties of the University of Havana.
According to the schedule approved by the National Assembly of People's Power, the aforementioned legislation must be put to a vote in December 2025.
Its approval, he said, will be a moment of consolidation of what the country has done in tourism.
We have managed to advance in accordance with how the issues of tourism law have been moving, especially in the region, he noted.
The Mintur director recalled that his country is part of the Convention of Sustainable Tourism Zones of the Caribbean and acts in accordance with the commitments made.
In May of last year, Cuba reported its accession to the International Convention for the Protection of Tourists, another effort by UN Tourism to achieve increasingly transparent and safe tourism at a global level, he noted.
On the subject, he said that Cuba demonstrated will and organizational and mobilization capabilities for the protection of visitors in circumstances such as the hurricanes that have hit the island.
Also in the face of the contingency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, including the care of tourists and their evacuation in a relatively short period despite the border closures and suspension of flights by airlines . (Text and Photo: PL)
