Camagüey, Dec. 24. - The Port of Nuevitas, in Camagüey, is getting ready to receive this Tuesday a coastal vessel that will allow the unloading of some 1,864 tons of rice and another 900 tons of peas from the standard family basket.
Rodney Roque Rodríguez, director of this Basic Business Unit (UEB, by its acronym in Spanish), explained that, as on other occasions, the objective is to carry out prompt dispatch to ensure payment to workers and avoid the ship staying in the port.
During the course of the year, he commented that there has been low port activity, so that to date only about 964 thousand pesos of profits have been collected.
Regarding exports, he specified that some 4,600 tons of chrome are being prepared, and support continues for the investment process that is being undertaken at the 26 de Julio Cement Factory, with the safekeeping of various materials and resources in the port’s warehouses.
For 2025, he considered that the UEB should concentrate its efforts on achieving food self-sovereignty to ensure better care for workers and provide services to other entities in order to guarantee the payment of salaries to workers, whose workforce exceeds 254 during periods of operation.
The Port of Nuevitas, he pointed out, among those of its kind in the country, is the largest indoor storage area, with warehouses that can store around 20 thousand tons, although he stressed that work is being done on the recovery of others that allow increasing that capacity.
