Yarisleidis Cirilo leads the best canoeists in Cuba in 2024


Havana, Dec 30. - Canoeist Yarislidis Cirilo leads the selection of the 10 best in canoeing, canoe and kayaking in Cuba in 2024, with her best endorsement in the bronze medal she won in the single-seater (C-1) at 200 meters at the Paris Olympic Games.

Cirilo was also recently chosen among the 10 most outstanding athletes of the largest of the Antilles and in September she received in Havana the Award for the Best Female Athlete of the Year 2023, awarded to her by the International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS) America, an incentive that was pending to be given to her.

At the multi-sport event in the City of Light, the Guantanamo athlete, a member of the Cuban parliament, did not get on the podium in the two-seater (C-2) at 500 meters, but advanced to the final and finished in eighth place along with the new Yisnoly Franchesca López, who also appears among the 10 chosen for canoeing.

Cirilo and Villa Clara native Yisnoly, who was also recognized for her results, but among the 10 best young athletes in Cuba in 2024, received recognition in the non-individual category of the event among the older ones.

Both, like the rest of the eight selected, are already thinking about the next commitments in 2025, among these the world championships for seniors, youth and under 23, as well as several world cups and the youth Pan American Games, informed the Cuban News Agency Alejandro Hamze, president and commissioner of this sport.

Without a doubt, a good number of competitions in the first year of the Olympic cycle that will close with Los Angeles 2028 Games, an event in which the world champion and the Santiago de Chile 2023 Pan American Games champion in the C-1 200 meters will surely have the opportunity to defend or improve the bronze achieved in the Parisian competition. 

Following Cirilo, the first Cuban female canoeist to climb onto an Olympic podium, and Yisnoly were the Olympian José Ramón Pelier, Daylen Rodríguez, Lismary Bombino, Yuraisy Morales, Elvis Reyes, Eduardo Aguilera, Julio Suárez and Anthony Lmadrid, in that order, Hamze added.
