Cuba remembers heroine Celia Sánchez on 45th anniversary of her death

Havana, Jan 11.- Cuba today commemorates the 45th anniversary of the death of Celia Sánchez Manduley, a transcendental figure of the Revolution, considered a keen interpreter of the ideas of Fidel Castro, historic leader of that emancipatory process on the island.

The outstanding revolutionary, born on May 9, 1920 in the sugar town of Media Luna, in the current eastern province of Granma, was a bold organizer of the landing of the Granma, and the first woman to join the Rebel Army.

Celia played a fundamental role in the dangerous activities of the clandestine struggle, the battles of the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra, and in the execution of important projects of inclusion and social equality and opportunities.

A sensitive woman committed to her people, she was until her death the right hand of the commander in chief, Fidel Castro, and especially in the arduous and silent task of collecting all the writings, from his letters to the most important documents, speeches and guidelines, to preserve a legacy of inestimable historical value.

With enormous courage, work capacity and qualification, Sánchez Manduley managed to combine the drive for great works with the smallest and most delicate details and attention to orphaned children, the sick and any other person in need of help.

A few months before turning 60, an early victim of cancer, the extraordinary heroine of the Sierra and the plains, baptized as Celia Esther de los Desamparados, who in life honored her name in favor of Cubans, died on this day in 1980. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
