Matanzas pays attention to water quality and Guiteras Thermoelectric

Matanzas, Feb 10th. - The performance at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant and the quality of water from the springs of Bello, an important source of supply for this city, are on Matanzas's sight because of its impact on essential services for the population.

Jorge Gómez Chávez, director of the Business Unit of Basic Production at CTE Guiteras, told the Cuban News Agency that a boiler fault is being repaired (called the red dot) and the plant is operating with a limited load of 120 megawatts.

The aim is to solve the gas leak with the plant in line with the National Electrical System (SEN); the work for this is estimated to be extended around 6:00 pm and then will proceed to increase power up to about 250 MW, Gómez Chávez, Director of the National Institute for Human Rights.

Last Monday the Guiteras stopped the generation unexpectedly, and after corrective work that lasted for about 96 hours, it joined SEN at 9:06 am on the recent Saturday.

In the territory, technical actions and microbiological analysis are carried out to monitor the quality of the water of Bello, a significant source of supply that will not tax this city until the indicators are suitable for human consumption, assured Antonio Hernández Martínez, delegate of Hydraulic Resources in the province of Matanzas.

Andrés Lamas Acevedo, director of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Matanzas, commented that it is not the first time that the deterioration of water from this source of supply is perceived and acted upon, and it is estimated that it has to do with the dumping of sugar cane waste from the central Boris Luis Santa Coloma, located in the neighboring province of Mayabeque.

With the mediation of the deficit of electricity generation in the country, which affects the pumping, reinforce the supply of water by tank cars in areas that receive the resource of the distribution center of Naranjal, to which Bello normally tributes, is a practical measure.

Although the water shot in the pipes is not enough because it is a resource highly demanded, it should be stressed that support vehicles from Mayabeque and Havana.

Also last week, more than 370 young people in this city were accredited as graduates of the University Of Medical Sciences Of Matanzas, ready to collaborate with the services of Cuba and the world.

In the vicinity of Plaza de La Vigía, 138 students who completed their medical studies, 59 nurses, 11 stomatologists and 169 graduates of health technologies participated in a gala to recognize academic efforts.

It was also pointed out that the Information and Social Communication Department of the province of Matanzas signed collaboration agreements to effectively implement the Law on Social Communication, the Office of the Procurator, and the Cuban Company of Airports and Airport Services (Ecasa) S.A.

The signing of the agreements took place in the context of the assessment by the Directorate for Information and Social Communication in the territory, carried out last Thursday at the headquarters of the provincial government of the People’s Power, In order to analyze progress and challenges in terms of driving and monitoring the current policy in this area.
