Kim Jong Il was born on February 16, 1942, a date that the DPRK consecrated as the Day of the Light Star in recognition of its contributions to independence and national sovereignty.
In addition to the general secretary of the Korean Labor Party, he was chairman of the National Defence Committee and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Havana and Pyongyang established diplomatic relations on August 29, 1960, by decision of their historical leaders, Fidel Castro and Kim Il Sung.
Since then, Cuba and the DPRK have maintained close mutual cooperation and agree on international issues, including Pyongyang's condemnation of the blockade that the United States exercises for more than 60 years against the island, says the Prensa Latina news agency. (Text and Photo: ACN)
