Havana, Mar 18th. - If there is an example of resistance and communication success in the face of the great monopolies of international media manipulation, that is the example of the media system of the Revolution in Cuba, said Ricardo Ronquillo Bello, president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).
In an exclusive conversation with the Cuban News Agency on the development of the IV International Colloquium Homeland, Ronquillo Bello stressed that the event is a contribution to Cuban journalists and press workers coming into contact with the most advanced that is happening in communication in the world to use those potentialities and tools to make a leap in the instrumentation of the transformation of the public media system in the country.
He said that Homeland is an essential space, not only to modernize the conception of the sector, but also to advance articulation with colleagues in other parts of the world, that is, with the most important left-wing and anti-hegemonic communication projects in the contemporary world and that are fighting against the totalitarianism of the big news channels.
In the case of Cuba, he said, all the resources of communication have been used to distort from the revolutionary triumph itself, and right now U.S. President Donald Trump has just announced the dismantling of Radio and Television Martí, which after decades of subversion-oriented existence have to eliminate them because they have not achieved their purposes.
The largest of the Antilles is a successful example of confronting the huge transnational manipulation machinery, and of course we cannot trust ourselves, he added.
He appreciated that it is time to continue working on the modernization and transformation of the press system and to bring the media agenda closer and closer to the daily life of Cubans, complex, crossed by tensions arising from the economic and cognitive war, but which has to be counted naturally and in all its contrasts.
He emphasized that the articulation has been evident in the growth of foreign participation in the successive editions of the Colloquium, the first Homeland came specialists from nine countries, the second of 13, to the third of 32 and the latter meeting has been attended by more than 200 experts from other latitudes, representing more than 40 countries.
In other words, Homeland has been winning in importance, I would say that it is among the most important left-wing communication concert events in the contemporary world and we are proud to celebrate it in besieged and dignified Cuba because of its resistance, he concluded.
The meeting arose in 2022 and is celebrated annually in the context of the Day for Cuban Press Day as a tribute to the newspaper founded by José Martí in 1892.
On this occasion it is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the multinational channel Telesur, by Commanders Fidel Castro Ruz and Hugo Chávez Frías, as well as to the 40 years of the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana, the venue of the meeting.
