Humberto Cuervo: Transforming Lives Through Dentistry and Teaching (+ Photos)

For Humberto Cuervo Gesto, a 29-year-old first-degree specialist in General Comprehensive Dentistry, his profession is reflected in an act of profound humanism and empathy. He shares these beliefs with his students during every teaching session.

His greatness can be measured not only by his physical stature, but also by the closeness and cohesion that permeates the Ismael Clark Mascaró clinic, located near the University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey. This center welcomes fifth- and sixth-year dentistry students, who benefit from his experience and dedication.

As a good teacher, Humberto establishes a special connection with his students, whom he teaches with love and patience, values ??he himself instilled when, as a child, he feared getting into a dental chair. This vocation, born in his early life, now benefits the patients who receive his care and advice. “Prevention is also the art of saving,” he asserts with conviction.

"We always try to do what we can," he says, demonstrating his commitment as the leader of a team that seeks alternatives to provide access to dental health services despite the limited resources they face. He acknowledges that services are currently insufficient, but assures that the entire population who come to the healthcare institution is served Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., prioritizing emergencies.

Humberto also works to educate people about oral hygiene, brushing, and proper diets to prevent cavities. He considers his work in schools one of his best experiences, as well as the gratitude he receives from his patients.

His approach to providing comprehensive care consists of treating people as if they were part of his family, understanding their worries and concerns. This philosophy is reflected in every consultation he conducts at the clinic, whether for periodontics, orthodontics, prosthetics, or surgery. On average, he sees around 45 patients per day, which can be intense, especially when some don't understand the limitations they face. However, at the end of the day, he feels satisfied having brought smiles to several faces.

For his students, Roxana Martínez Tuero, Arlenis Esquivel Montal, and Amanda Pérez Fernández, the knowledge and passion of their "Profe" will be fundamental in their professional lives. They have witnessed his frustration and concern when things don't go as expected, but also how he is always willing to encourage them to improve, supporting them with his example of a professional who never stops learning and strives to provide quality service.
