Havana, Mar 20th. - Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Cuba's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, denounced today that the cause of human rights is being used as a business and a political instrument.
The Cuban diplomat expressed his country's rejection of punitive and politically motivated resolutions that lack the consent of the states concerned.
He noted that such mandates are useless for improving the human rights situation on the ground, because they build walls instead of bridges.
He added that they also damage the Council's credibility and the cause of human rights, while squandering resources.
The Cuban representative described as unacceptable the attempts to turn this body into a tribunal against certain nations, which are always from the South.
"Today we heard several representatives make extensive lists of countries that supposedly violate human rights. Many of these lists have failed to denounce the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people. The hypocrisy could not be more evident," he said.
Benítez Verson warned about the recent disclosure of the United States government's practices of dedicating millions of dollars to finance organizations, media outlets, and communication platforms that use the supposed protection of human rights and democracy as a facade, when in reality, he stated, they promote that country's hegemonic agenda.
Cuba will defend the Council's institutionality against attempts to impose a single model of human rights on the world, he asserted.
In his speech, the diplomat also denounced unilateral coercive measures, such as the economic blockade imposed on Cuba, stating that they flagrantly violate the human rights of the affected peoples.
The only effective way to promote human rights in all countries is through respectful dialogue and genuine cooperation, he concluded. (Text and photo: ACN)
