Havana, March 22nd. - Delegations from the agricultural sectors of Cuba and the Dominican Republic exchanged knowledge and best practices in crop management, seeds, and genetic material in order to forge partnerships.
Representatives from the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Agriculture visited various sites on the island to learn from producers and officials in the agricultural and agroforestry sectors about the development of the Cubafruta, Máscafé, and Hab.AMA cooperation projects, promoted in Cuba by the Italian Agency for International Development Cooperation (AICS).
In this context, Antonio Festa, director of AICS in Havana, asserted that promoting cooperation among countries in the region represents an AICS strategy to contribute to food security.
As part of the Fiagrop 2025 International Agro-Industrial Food Fair, Dominican representatives toured sites such as the Placeres del Campo mini-industry on the Las Piedras farm in Guanabacoa, and other sites of economic and scientific interest in Havana.
Led by Miriam Estela Guzmán, Deputy Minister of Rural Development, and comprised of three experts in fruit growing, horticulture, and small livestock, the Dominican delegation learned the ins and outs of the Fruit and Vegetable Processing and Packaging Center (the mini-industry), part of the Efraín Mayor Credit and Services Cooperative.
The two nations' ministries of agriculture expressed interest in collaborating on the production and processing of fruit trees such as avocado, guava, coconut, mango, and pineapple, as well as on urban and suburban agriculture programs and small livestock production.
Guzmán emphasized that the collaboration between the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Agriculture and Cuba represents a significant step toward strengthening food security in the region.
"The integration of shared experiences and knowledge not only aims at sustainable agricultural development, but also aims to promote the inclusion of small producers in the market," she added.
In addition to the Havana locations, the delegation visited productive areas, cooperatives, and companies in the municipalities of Jagüey Grande, in the province of Matanzas, and Ciego de Ávila. (PL) (Photo: Taken from the Internet)
