Camaguey, Apr 15th. - Camagüey, one of Cuba's main cities, has taken a significant course towards agricultural sustainability by implementing agroecological practices on more than 100 farms located in the so-called green ring. This area surrounding the Agramonte’s capital has become a key space for the development of urban, suburban and family agriculture, focusing on the restoration and improvement of soil fertility.
The farms in this area stand out for their plantations of vibes and vegetables where innovative polyculture techniques are applied. This approach, which promotes crop diversity in the same area, not only optimizes the use of resources, but also contributes to the resilience of agricultural ecosystems. The combination of different plant species allows for better use of soil nutrients and reduces dependence on chemical inputs.
In addition to cultivation practices, a strong emphasis has been placed on the development of genetic levels that strengthen local livestock. This strategy aims to improve the quality and productivity of livestock in order to meet the food and economic challenges facing the region.
Social and Community commitment is another fundamental pillar in the development of agriculture in the province. Camagüey’s subsidiaries of the Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians, as well as the Association of Animal Production, provide their support and advice to local peasants. This collaboration seeks not only to promote more efficient planting techniques, but also to educate and empower producers in the management of their farms.
Camagüey is set as an example to be followed in the implementation of sustainable and responsible agricultural practices. Through agroecology and joint work the city is moving towards a future where food security and the preservation of the environment go hand in hand. The green ring initiative is a testament to the potential of urban agriculture to transform communities and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
