Cuba-Vietnam collaboration promotes sustainable aquaculture development in Camagüey


Santa Cruz del Sur, Camagüey, 22 Apr.- With the aim of developing aquaculture in the largest of the Antilles, the government of Vietnam carries out a project of international collaboration in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Sur began last year 2024 with the planting of five hectares for the extensive cultivation of shrimp.

The Cultisur Base Business Unit of that locality welcomes this experience that in the coming months will allow to increase in other provinces of Cuba the production of crustacean for export and the domestic market, based on the creation of new capacities for its reproduction.

The technicians and shrimp who receive several training actions with a view to achieving adequate management of the extensive cultivation of the vannamei species.

Miguel Manso Díaz, Head of Production Company for Srimp Farming, said that modern technology of Asian origin will allow ten more hectares to be hired from April, which is expected to contribute 45 tons in the second half of this year.

The provinces of Villa Clara and Pinar del Río also benefit from this project, which covers the cultivation of other species, and includes the training of all Cuban personnel and the transfer of technology.

Tenog Cung Diuh, a forecaster for the Vietnam-Cuba project in aquaculture, said that this project is a very interesting experience for the two countries because they train the experiences in the cultivation of shrimp and just feed back from the procedures used in SaNta Cruz del Sur in this productive branch.

Ten other ponds were in the preparation phase in order to plant 100 animals per square meter, looking for yields equivalent to 900 or 1,000 kilograms.
