Yonaiki Hernández Reyes: A brave and determined peasant woman (+ Photos)

Nuevitas, Camagüey, May 17 – Giving up to life's vicissitudes is not an option for Yonaiki Hernández Reyes, a peasant woman associated with the Omelio López Credit and Services Cooperative, who owns a farm on the outskirts of Nuevitas, northeast of Camagüey.

Those who know her describe her as a brave, cheerful, determined woman, and a writer of poems.

To all those who are peasants, I want to congratulate them, and also greet them, to those who are planting, because they are helping to face a new year.

How much concern is there for the peasant man/who, defying fate/puts effort into his work/achieving ever better/his harvests and crops.

To this day, nothing has been able to stop his production, neither drought, nor cyclone, nor pests nor diseases, have stopped his will and courage.

The peasant is reason/ living off what he produces/ his dedication leads us/ to a better Cuba.

Yonaikis gained experience as a rancher when she inherited land and cattle after her husband's death.

I learned to milk the cows on my own, but now I perform at full capacity. Agriculture requires hard work, but also love and dedication. This is how I have achieved good results, which are evident in the increase of the offspring and the harvests.

Having the support of her daughter, parents, friends, and loved ones, and the love for nature, gives her the strength to keep going and is often a source of inspiration for the poems she writes. Therefore, she encourages young people to care for the environment as part of life.

Pure air, radiance/ living rocks in the river/ in the distance a hut/ is the farmer's home.

Rainbow of color/ that accompanies the mountains/ kisses the plume to Don Sol from the tall palms/ and the heart grows/ living among flora and fauna.

With that blend of strength and sweetness, Yonaiki manifests her willpower in life and wakes up each morning with a renewed spirit to fulfill her work in the countryside.

It is customary, between three and four in the morning, to get out of bed because she is in charge of milking the cattle to deliver the milk early to the Nuevitas Dairy Combine, and later she takes care of the goats and rams, in addition to taking care of the household chores.

She says that her cattle, which she affectionately calls her girls, and her calves as well, already know her and respond to the names she has assigned.

Yonaiki Hernández Reyes, a prominent peasant from Nuevitas, also likes to play dominoes, sing and dance; she recognizes that family, friends, work, and poetry are her main motivations for radiating optimism and energy to those who approach her.
