Rome, July 8 – Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, climbed to the summit of Fidel Peak in the Italian Alps, where a solidarity act with Cuba was held, a spokesperson said today.
In the long journey made on the eve to the place, located at a height of 1,600 meters, which is named after the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander-in-chief Fidel Castro, participated the ambassador of Cuba in this country, Mirta Granda, and members of National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC, for its acronym in Spanish).
A tribute was paid to Fidel in front of the monument erected in his memory at that point on Mount Arpone in the northern region of Piedmont, in an emotional ceremony which was also attended by the third secretary of the Cuban mission, Gabriela Gámez, and the president of the ANAIC, Marco Papacci, reported the latter to Prensa Latina.
Gerardo Hernández, one of the five anti-terrorist fighters who suffered long years of imprisonment in US prisons for acting in defense of their country and people, and current national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, unfurled a gigantic Cuban flag at these heights along with the other participants.
The deputy and member of his country's Council of State expressed his gratitude for the friendship and support of the Italian people for its Revolution and its people in the struggle they are waging to defend their revolutionary process.
The members of Anaic attending the ceremony reaffirmed their solidarity with the island and their commitment to new actions to denounce the criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the US government and its unjust inclusion on the spurious list of nations alleged sponsors of terrorism, Papacci emphasized.
During his visit to Italy, which will end on Wednesday, Hernández Nordelo carried out an extensive plan of activities in Rome, as well as in several activities in the regions of Campania, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont, where he participated in several meetings with friends from Cuba.
