Camagüey, July 8 – Alexander Manzo Guzmán, head of the Nursing Department at the Commander René Vallejo Ortiz Provincial Teaching Psychiatric Hospital in this city, has always felt a special connection to this institution.
For him, this center is not only the place where his grandparents worked, but also a refuge where he spent hours playing and getting acquainted with patients. From a very young age, he experienced firsthand the love for this profession to which he has dedicated more than 30 years.
When choosing his career, he didn't hesitate to decide on nursing. Thanks to his excellent academic results, he was able to choose a place to work, and his first choice was to return to the psychiatric hospital, a place he considered his second home. He started as a ward chief of the chronic patients living there and over time these patients became part of his family.
His modest contributions not only impacted his local community but also reached Angola, where he served on an international mission.
Currently, one of his main challenges is passing on his love for this noble profession to the next generation, in an institution he considers a big family, where professionals with more than 15 years of experience work with dedication and commitment.
Alexander recognizes that love is the best cure for all ills and that, along with dedication and effort, it is possible to help convalescents reintegrate into society. Nursing work, he says, is fundamental to this process, and he performs it with pride. He has learned that behind every diagnosis lies a story, a dream, and a desire to be understood.
