Camagüey advances toward resilient agriculture with organic fertilizers and ecological awareness

Camagüey, September 2nd – With the aim of strengthening the soil's vegetative layer and boosting agricultural yields, the province of Camagüey is implementing worm humus as an agroecological fertilizer. This initiative seeks not only to improve crops productivity but also to contribute to ecosystem enhancement by promoting agricultural practices that are more environmentally responsible.

The agroecological movement in Camagüey has a solid base of organization and training. Currently, more than 290 facilitators and over three thousand promoters, belonging to the National Association of Small Farmers in the territory and the Camagüey branch of the Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians, work to spread measures that protect and restore soil quality.

This natural fertilizer helps retain moisture in the soil, which favors plants development. Additionally, it detoxifies soils contaminated with chemical products and contributes to maintaining a healthier and more balanced environment, enhancing the absorption of essential nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium.

In the region, the application of organic fertilizers, compost, crop residues, natural microorganisms, and animal manure also form part of the routine actions to keep tuber, vegetable, grain, and fruit plantations in optimal condition.

This approach not only improves soil health and agricultural production, but also increases ecological awareness among producers and rural communities. Camagüey is moving toward a sustainable and resilient agroecology, promoting practices that protect the land, increase yields, and contribute to ecosystem conservation.
