Camagüey, July 11 – The municipality of Florida, one of the most important in Camagüey, is working on perfecting its Development Strategy, which focuses on promoting four key sectors through more than 300 actions aimed at achieving a productive and sustainable municipality.
Food production, infrastructure, foreign trade, and economic and sociodemographic development are the essential lines defined in this plan, which was updated with the opinions of delegates to the Municipal Assembly of People's Power, various economic stakeholders during the last session of the Technical Advisory Council, professors and experts from the local University Center, part of the Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz University of Camagüey; and specialists from local entities.
Florida, with strong roots in the sugarcane industry, sugarcane derivatives, food, and agriculture, among other potential, focuses its efforts on the advancement of these areas. In addition to climate change adaptation and mitigation, it seeks more results territorial self-supply of food, in order to respond to the needs of the population, including living conditions, according to the local radio station's website.
This Camagüey municipality, one of the most populated in the region, has several Local Development Projects (PDL, for its acronym in Spanish) underway or is planning, as well as other programs in the fields of agriculture, industry, construction materials manufacturing, and housing fund improvement.
This strategy includes the efficient use of energy sources and renewable energy, as well as attention to demographic, rural, and community work policies, according to Radio Florida Digital.
As part of the development objectives, the Board of Directors recently approved two new PDLs (Local Development Projects) with own funding and bank credit aimed at food production in the agricultural sphere.
The first of these is called Huevos-Traviesos, and will be implemented on the Media Luna farm of farmer Evelio Travieso Quintana, who primarily aims to raise chickens in rustic buildings to produce eggs and meat for sale.
Meanwhile, the second initiative, led by farmer Israel Mederos of La Caridad farm, will focus on raising laying hens, promoting freshwater fish, and producing guinea pig for consumption.
Both projects respond to the urgent need to expand and diversify protein offerings to the population. Among the collateral benefits are the generation of income and jobs, as well as contributions of up to 20 percent of profits to the state budget of the municipality of Florida.
