Camagüey Science Center celebrates 36 years of innovation (+ Photos)

Camagüey, July 25. - With the fulfillment of the production and commercial objectives for the first half of 2025, and inspired by the legacy of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB, for its acronym in Spanish) celebrates today the 36th anniversary of the creation of this scientific institution.

Nemesio González Fernández, PhD, head of the aforementioned group, highlighted the development and inclusion of new projects with the mission entrusted by Fidel to apply biotechnology to the agricultural sphere and achieve economic advances in the country with impacts on yields.

By the end of June, 293,000 doses of the GAVAC immunogen against cattle ticks had been produced, with just over 146,000 animals treated with the product.

In the same way, 1890 units of the Hebernem bionematicide were delivered and benefited sixty hectares of protected crops of economic interest, as well as 930 thousand doses of the PORVAC vaccine with 465 thousand treated pigs.

The values exceed 41 million pesos, an example of the scientific work that they enhance with research and projects, such as advances in the extension of transgenic seeds with satisfactory results in various crops, collaboration with with the Cuba-Café Joint Venture, based on the fermentation of that product, and the progress made in the vaccine against rabbit hemorrhagic disease, in conjunction with the CIGB (Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology) in Havana.

The ties with the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz, especially with the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Economics, and Computer Science—together with future aspirations and strategies for the export and development of new bioproducts—are part of the work of the 125 employees of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology 36 years after its founding.
