From Camagüey to Birán, a tribute that transcends time and distance (+ Photos)

Camagüey, August 13.- Every time you visit Birán, you'll feel the passion of finding a welcoming place that contrasts with everything around it: the imposing family home of beautiful colors and the history of Fidel within.

November 5, 2016, was the second time I visited that dream-filled environment in which time does not seem to pass.

No one could imagine that just three weeks later, when the workers of the Adelante newspaper chose the place for the award ceremony of the Written Press Colloquium in Camagüey, the Historical Leader of the Revolution died.

The Adelante family's goal in arriving there was to pay a modest tribute to the Commander in Chief's ninetieth birthday.

As noted in the article published that day by a colleague, the 283 kilometers separating the city of the tinajones (earthenware jars) from the symbolic site gave no opportunity for fatigue.

Interest was sparked by Antonio López Herrera, historian of Fidel's birthplace with extensive knowledge, who described a chronology of the several changes the site underwent: from its earliest days to the moment it was transformed into a national museum.

Also vital during the trip was to observe the school where Fidel studied as a child. Various snapshots hang on its wooden walls that reflect these stages of the young student.

On the other hand, the house where he lived with his parents harked back to that time when the patriotic values and ideals based on Martí's thought were beginning to germinate. (Text and photos: Enrique Atiénzar Rivero/Radio Cadena Agramonte Contributor)
