Havana, August 18 - The Cuban ambassador to Egypt, Alexander Pellicer, described the ties between his country and the African state as stable and historic in an interview with the newspaper Al Ahram Online, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two nations “have maintained historical relations of friendship and cooperation for over 75 years,” Pellicer emphasized to this major and influential media outlet in the Arab nation, one of the oldest in the Middle East.
“Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba on September 5, 1949. Since then, our relations have remained uninterrupted,” he added.
He also stated that “over these years of connection, the close friendship established between Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser stands out, making them two of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century.”
Pellicer affirmed that Egypt and Cuba are advocates of peace and share a high degree of agreement on key international issues, highlighting Cairo’s support for “the cause of the Palestinian people to establish their independent and sovereign state and live in peace.”
Furthermore, he noted that Egypt has supported “the Cuban resolution against the blockade imposed by the United States, which is presented annually at the UN General Assembly.”
Additionally, he expressed that “unfortunately, the level of our economic and trade relations does not match the political and diplomatic relations between our nations.”
“However, there is political will and interest from both governments to work towards developing and strengthening economic and trade relations in areas of mutual interest,” concluded the Cuban diplomat. (Text and Photo: PL)
