Vatican City, August 18 - Pope Leo XIV reiterated today the importance of advancing peace negotiations to end armed conflicts and prioritize the welfare of the people.
A statement released by the Vatican press office highlights that, following the Angelus prayer held at noon this Sunday, the Supreme Pontiff called for prayers “that the efforts to end wars and promote peace may be successful.”
During the ceremony, held in front of the faithful and pilgrims gathered in Liberty Square outside the Apostolic Palace of the Papal Villas in Castel Gandolfo, the Bishop of Rome also emphasized that, in these negotiations, “the common good of the peoples must always come first.”
A report published on the Vatican News website pointed out that when he made these remarks, Leo XIV was referring to ongoing processes aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, which is threatening to escalate following Tel Aviv’s announcement of its decision to militarily occupy the Gaza Strip.
In particular, according to that news outlet, the Holy Father’s call was directed towards negotiations for a ceasefire and peace between Kyiv and Moscow, which are moving towards potential progress following the recent summit on August 15 between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
