Cuban and Ethiopian parties committed to strengthening cooperation

Addis Ababa, September 12. - The Communist Party of Cuba and the Ethiopian Prosperity Party reaffirmed their longstanding collaboration today and committed to deepen cooperation in the political, economic, and social spheres.

This was agreed upon by the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González Llort, leading a Caribbean delegation on a working visit to Addis Ababa from September 12 to 15, and the director of Public and International Relations of the local political group, Bikila Hurissa.

During the meeting, González Llort expressed his congratulations on the successful completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and sent his best wishes to the African people for their New Year. He described the GERD as a symbol of self-sufficiency and a model of national determination with lessons for Africa and the world in general.

Both sides highlighted the historic fraternity between the two countries and agreed to expand cooperation through inter-party, government-to-government, and people-to-people channels.

They emphasized the need to formalize ties through memoranda of understanding and strategic alliances, as well as to explore new areas of collaboration.

The dialogue also addressed the impact of the United States government's unilateral sanctions against Cuba. In this regard, Hurissa expressed his solidarity with the Caribbean island, calling these extraterritorial measures an "economic war against the people" that undermines the country's sovereign rights.

Likewise, the local representative recognized Cuba's resilience in the face of external pressure as an example of national pride and independence.

Both sides also emphasized that, in today's multipolar world, global challenges must be addressed with equity, dialogue, and cooperation, rather than intimidation.

On the other hand, the Caribbean delegation, also comprised of Havana's ambassador to Addis Ababa, Meylin Suárez Álvarez, and ICAP's Africa director, Yahimi Todríguez Flores, was received by the Leadership of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cuba at the headquarters of the House of Peoples' Representatives (Parliament).

The meeting with Abdulkedir Gelgelo, head of the leadership, focused on deepening relations between the Parliaments of both countries, as well as cooperation on international agenda issues.

The exchange reaffirmed the historic ties of friendship and solidarity that unite Cuba and Ethiopia, and the commitment to continue strengthening joint work in the legislative field. (Text and photo: PL)
