Camagüey celebrates 66 years of the Amalia Simoni Hospital, a symbol of care and dedication

Camagüey, September 12. - The team at the Amalia Simoni Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital in Camagüey is preparing to celebrate its 66th anniversary in November, commemorating its long history of medical care.

Founded by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the center continues to work with dedication despite the economic and financial limitations facing the public health sector in Cuba, resulting from the intensification of the US government's blockade.

With a staff of more than 800 workers, the center focuses its efforts on improving the quality of its services in various provincial specialties. These include Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Forensic Medicine, Pulmonology, Hematology, Geriatrics, and Gerontology, as well as key areas for the center's operation, such as Surgery, Internal Medicine, Infectology, Orthopedics, and Dermatology.

The hospital's Hematology clinic, which has 16 beds and four isolation rooms, has been a pioneer in caring for patients with diseases affecting blood production and its components for more than a decade. It treats acute pathologies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and other malignant blood diseases.

Dr. Orlando Olivera Morán, a first-degree hematology specialist, explains that one of the priority programs in this specialty is the comprehensive care of hemophiliac patients, using preventative treatments with monoclonal antibodies to reduce bleeding crises.

The protection and comprehensive care of the elderly is also a crucial aspect of the hospital's work. Dr. Leonor Porto Franco, a specialist in Geriatrics and Gerontology, performs specialized clinical evaluations to address the various disorders and needs of older adults, ensuring humane and specialized care.

The hospital also maintains prioritized care for patients with infectious diseases, playing a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, efforts are being intensified to control arboviruses, especially dengue, through the timely isolation of cases that require it.

The institution also has a six-bed Intensive Care Unit, equipped to care for critically ill patients, and a Computed Axial Tomography area that provides services to other hospitals in the province and nearby regions.

The commitment of the Amalia Simoni Hospital team, led by the young Lilianne María Hidalgo Ruiz, a specialist in Intensive Medicine and Emergencies, is based on professionalism, interdisciplinarity, and dedication both to patients and the community. Their goal is to offer increasingly humane, comprehensive, and excellent medical service for the health benefit of all inhabitants of Camagüey.
