20th Gibara International Cinema Festival 2026 Announced


Havana, Oct. 2 – The International Poor Cinema Festival of Gibara (20 FICGIBARA 2026) today published the competition requirements for the different categories of the event, which will take place from April 14 to 18 in the eastern Cuban province of Holguín.

The multicultural event promotes, makes visible and connects with many people; it is a pleasure to be able to work on a project with two facets: cultural and local development, stated festival director Sergio Benvenuto at a recent press conference.

Works of any nationality in their original language with Spanish subtitles are welcome to participate in the 20 FICGIBARA 2026; their completion date is between 2024 and the closing date of this call, according to the publication on the festival's website.

The competition categories are Fiction Feature Film, Fiction Short Film, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, Animation, and Experimental Audiovisual.

Works will compete for the Lucía Awards, the main prizes of the festival, as well as other collateral awards; requirements for the categories Cinema in Construction and Poor Cinema Factory 2026 will be published in the coming weeks.

Interested parties must submit a registration form that will be available on the website, where all the event details are published, from October 6 to January 5, 2026, the admission deadline.

The Poor Cinema Festival of Gibara was founded in 2003 and integrates artistic manifestations, theoretical debates, and community participation; it is one of the most valued events in the alternative seventh art sector in Latin America. (Text and photo: PL)
