Cuba prepares for the 2026 Population and Housing Census

Havana, October 18 — Cuba continues preparations for the population and housing census set for next year, reported the national television news.

The report covers analyses by the Government Commission for Demographic Attention regarding the preliminary registration and the census trial.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero stressed the necessity of the census and updated data for better decision-making, given the critical situation and complex demographic trends in the country.

The National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI, for its acronym in Spanish) announced that preparation seminars for the census trial are underway in Santa Cruz del Norte, a municipality in the western Mayabeque province, as well as with specialists from other regions.

During a meeting in Havana, discussions also addressed internal migration between provinces, a long-standing phenomenon affecting local development strategies and food production, especially in rural areas.

Antonio Aja, director of the Demographic Studies Center at the University of Havana, noted that almost 30% of those who moved from rural areas in 2024 were young people aged 15 to 34, which could worsen the already difficult demographic situation, according to his words.

The Government Commission for Demographic Attention, led by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, also reviewed the maternal and child health program, results of international cooperation, and donations supporting efforts to follow up on these issues. (Text and photo: PL)
