Cuba to denounce blockade damages at XXI Civil Society Forum

Havana, October 20 - The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU, for its acronym in Spanish) will hold the XXI Forum of Cuban Civil Society against the Blockade on October 24. The event will address the U.S. policy that violates fundamental human rights and currently obstructs the country’s development.

Under the theme “The devastating impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba on organizations and other actors of Cuban civil society,” the forum aims to delve into the human, social, and economic consequences that the U.S. embargo has caused in the daily lives of Cubans.

This forum is part of a series of annual activities by Cuban civil society around the UN General Assembly vote on the resolution against the blockade. Its goal is to create a space for reflection, denunciation, and mobilization.

Official data shows that from March 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, the economic blockade caused estimated material damages to Cuba amounting to approximately $7.56 billion USD.

The historical losses suffered by the Caribbean nation during more than six decades of blockade reach $170.7 billion USD at current prices, and $2.1 trillion USD when valued at gold.

When presenting a new report in September on the effects caused by the blockade, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated that the psychological impact of the hostile U.S. policy on Cuban families is impossible to quantify.

More than 80 percent of Cuban women and men were born after the beginning of the blockade; the consequences of this policy are dramatically evidenced in the shortages faced by our population, he stressed. This reality is undeniable, it is tangible, he remarked. (Text and photo: PL)
