Santiago de Cuba: Today, the Ibero-American Meeting of Heritage Cemeteries


Havana, Oct. 20.- The cultural contributions of the so-called cities of the dead are being examined through the critical lens and theoretical reflection of experts who, from October 20 to 23, are gathering in this southeastern city for the 26th Ibero-American Meeting on the Appraisal and Management of Heritage Cemeteries.

Participants from a dozen nations, including Spain, Switzerland, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Colombia, will have a guided tour of the Santa Ifigenia cemetery, declared a National Monument, as their first activity. This will be immediately followed by the official opening of the event at the Meliá Santiago de Cuba hotel, featuring a keynote lecture by M.Sc. Omar López Rodríguez, architect and conservator of the city.

Under the budget, "Cemetery Management for its Enhancement." The funerary universe as a space for interrelations and sociocultural endeavors will include workshops, thematic panels, exhibitions, and a mystical-cultural evening at Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.

As part of the event, the General Assembly of the Ibero-American Network for the Appraisal and Management of Heritage Cemeteries will also hold a session at the Meliá Santiago de Cuba. The largest of the Antilles is a member of this network.

Tours of sites of historical and cultural interest in the city of Santiago, such as the urban center, the San Pedro de la Roca Castle (a World Heritage Site), and the town of El Cobre, are included among the planned activities.

Among other topics, the meeting plans to facilitate an exchange on issues such as the environmental problems of heritage cemeteries, as well as the preservation and enhancement of Ibero-American funerary heritage. (Text and photo: Trabajadores Digital)
