Cuban journalists show solidarity with those affected by Hurricane Melissa

Havana, October 30 - The Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC, for its acronym in Spanish) today urged its members to actively participate in the campaign to support the eastern provinces affected by the recent passage of Hurricane Melissa.

In a letter signed by the National Presidency of the guild organization, the “extensive and rigorous news coverage” provided by Cuban media during the emergency phase of the storm was acknowledged.

It also points out that this journalistic deployment was commended by the National Defense Council and that now the professionals in the field have the social responsibility to accompany the people in the recovery stage.

With that purpose, it affirms, the UPEC will coordinate with the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR, for its acronym in Spanish) the reception, classification and distribution of material donations that the journalistic collectives manage to gather.

In territories outside Havana, delegations can deliver their contributions to the municipal or provincial headquarters of the CDRs, according to the schedules and deadlines established by this mass organization, the statement details.

It specifies that in Havana, donations collected by national and provincial media outlets can be delivered directly to the national headquarters of the CDRs, located on Línea Street between L and K.

It notes that in case of logistical difficulties with transportation, the collectives can contact the UPEC branches presidents to find alternatives that guarantee the arrival of the aid.

The UPEC Presidency also requested that all delegations inform their provincial or branch directorates about the donations delivered, in order to follow up this solidarity mobilization.

At the same time, the organization maintains direct contact with the presidents of the UPEC (Union of Cuban Journalists) in Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Las Tunas, and Guantánamo—the provinces most affected—to identify colleagues and their families who have suffered material losses, with the aim of channeling specific and personalized support.

"We are sure that, in accordance with the humanism and social sensitivity that have always distinguished us, the membership of our UPEC will be up to this altruistic and generous call," concludes the message. (Source: Prensa Latina)
