Camagüey, November 4 - The province of Camagüey has begun its vaccination campaign against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a measure included in Cuba's National Immunization Program. More than 3,000 nine-year-old girls will receive the first dose of this vaccine, which protects against serotypes 16 and 18, responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancer cases worldwide.

The girls will receive a 0.5 ml dose intramuscularly. In cases of girls diagnosed with immunodeficiency diseases, two doses will be administered to ensure greater protection. The Conrado Benítez School was the main venue for the informational activities, with the participation of health specialists who emphasized the importance of immunization in preventing this disease.

Taimí Miranda Vergara, head of the Vaccination Program in the region, explained that vaccination sites will be set up in all primary schools and special education centers to facilitate access for families. The vaccine used in this initiative is Cecolin.

It was also announced that girls under nine years old can be vaccinated at nearby health centers or vaccination clinics when they reach that age to complete their protection.

Looking ahead to 2030, Cuba has adopted the 90-70-90 strategy, which aims to vaccinate 90 percent of girls, enable early detection of lesions in 70 percent of women, and provide treatment to 90 percent of affected patients, with the goal of significantly reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer in the country.
