Canada's strong response to Trump after his claim that the country lives thanks to the US

Canada, Jan 24.- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded this Thursday to statements by President Donald Trump, who asserted that "Canada lives thanks to the United States."

Carney flatly rejected that claim. He acknowledged that both countries have built an "extraordinary partnership" in economic matters, security, and cultural exchange, but stressed that this relationship does not define the existence or development of his nation.

"Canada prospers because we are Canadians," he stated, highlighting values such as inclusion, equity, and ambition as the pillars of the country's growth.

Furthermore, he presented Canada as an example within a global context marked by the rise of populism and ethnic nationalism.

Diversity—he maintained—is a strength. In times of democratic backsliding, it is possible to protect rights and freedoms, as well as maintain a democracy that shields the most vulnerable sectors against the most powerful.

The Prime Minister's remarks followed Trump's claims, made within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos, that Canada receives great benefits from the United States and that a potential acquisition of Greenland by Washington would also contribute to Canadian defense.

"Canada lives thanks to the United States," the U.S. president stated, further reproaching an alleged lack of gratitude from the Ottawa government—words that prompted Carney's forceful response. (Text and Photo: Cubadebate)
