Event fosters economic alliances for food security

Havana, Jan 29. - With the participation of 50 new forms of management, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is conducting a national seminar dedicated to strengthening food security and nutrition through collaboration with the non-state sector.

The event, taking place at the Memories Miramar Hotel in this capital, is part of the agency's Strategic Plan aimed at supporting assistance to vulnerable population groups, with the support of the National Institute of Non-State Economic Actors and the Cuban Chamber of Commerce, explained Étienne Labande, WFP Representative in Cuba, in an exclusive statement to the ACN.

In recognition of the role these entities play in today's society, including small and medium-sized enterprises, local development projects, non-agricultural cooperatives, and self-employed workers, the seminar offers a training and exchange space focused on exploring opportunities for future collaboration.

During the inaugural session, thematic areas were addressed, such as integrated local food systems resilient to climate shocks, the strengthening of social protection programs, and preparedness and response to natural disaster emergencies.

Strategies for logistics, digitalization, and communication aimed at promoting healthy eating, gender equity, and youth participation were also presented.

Conceived as a platform to build strategic alliances, identify ongoing actions, and promote sustainable solutions, the meeting brings together representatives of government institutions, international organizations, and agencies of the United Nations System present in the country.

It was revealed that, following the first edition of the event and the response to the call disseminated on social networks, the WFP plans to conduct regional replicas of the seminar to expand the reach of these cooperation experiences.

WFP's collaboration with Cuba began in 1963 with assistance to those affected by Hurricane Flora, and since then, it has carried out some 26 emergency operations and 12 development projects, demonstrating its sustained commitment to the progress and resilience of the Caribbean nation.
