Mexico reveals shocking number of illegal weapons originating from the US

Mexico, Feb 12.- Mexico's Secretary of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, revealed this Tuesday that 78% of the 18,000 long and short weapons that have been seized from criminal organizations since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024 came from the US.

Participating in the presidential conference, the official specified that among the shipments of illegal weapons, 215 Barrett rifles, 20 grenade launchers, 13 rocket launchers, and 273 machine guns of various calibers stand out.

The data was presented after the newspaper The New York Times published an article over the weekend stating that weapons manufactured for the US Armed Forces have ended up in the hands of Mexican cartels, who use them to confront police in shootouts, shoot down helicopters, assassinate officials, and massacre civilians.
